Manarcad Perunnal 2025 – Kerala’s Majestic Eight-Day Feast
The Manarcad Perunnal 2025, also known as the Ettunombu Perunnal (meaning eight-day fast in Malayalam), is one of the most revered Christian festivals in Kerala. Celebrated every year from September 1 to 8 at St. Mary’s Jacobite Syrian Cathedral in Manarcad, near Kottayam, this grand feast honors the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Thousands of devotees gather during this holy week to observe fasting, prayer, and sacred rituals, making it not only a spiritual event but also a vibrant cultural celebration.

The festival begins on September 1 with devotees taking part in continuous prayer and fasting, a ritual that symbolizes dedication, humility, and deep faith. Throughout these days, the church premises turn into a spiritual hub where thousands of faithful spend their time in worship, confession, and sacred hymns.
The highlight of the Manarcad Perunnal is the Rasa procession, held on September 6, 2025. This grand spectacle features the sacred golden cross carried with devotion, alongside brilliantly decorated muthukkuda (ornamental umbrellas), traditional brass bands, and a sea of devotees chanting prayers. The Rasa procession stands as one of the largest Christian processions in Asia, making it a true symbol of Kerala’s spiritual unity and cultural grandeur.
On September 7, the sacred portrait of the Virgin Mary with Infant Jesus is unveiled in a ritual known as Nadathurakkal. Pilgrims from across Kerala and beyond gather to witness this moment, seeking blessings for prosperity, health, and divine grace.
St. Mary’s Jacobite Syrian Cathedral is recognized as a Global Marian Pilgrim Centre and plays a significant role in Malankara Christian traditions. The Manarcad Perunnal 2025 is not just a religious event but also a celebration of Kerala’s communal harmony, cultural richness, and spiritual depth. With its blend of rituals, music, prayers, and traditions, the Perunnal is an unforgettable experience for both pilgrims and tourists.
