Koratty Perunnal – Feast of Koratty Muthy
Koratty Perunnal is an annual Christian festival celebrated at St. Mary’s Forane Church (Koratty Muthy Church) in Koratty, Thrissur district, Kerala. The festival honours the Virgin Mary, locally known as Koratty Muthy. It’s one of the most important Marian feasts in Kerala, drawing thousands of devotees, pilgrims, and visitors each year in October.
The festival is especially famous for the “Poovankula” offering — a special variety of plantain (banana) that devotees offer as part of their vow.
Rituals include Thulabharam — where devotees offer items (often bananas) equivalent to their body weight, as a symbol of thanksgiving or seeking blessings.
Novenas, special Holy Masses, processions, candlelight vigils, and prayers form the heart of the celebration.
The church becomes beautifully adorned. Decorations, lights, floral arrangements, and the sounds of hymns, bells and devotional music fill the air.
It’s a major pilgrimage centre throughout the year, but during the Perunnal, the atmosphere becomes especially festive and spiritual.

By Road: Koratty is located in Thrissur district. It’s accessible by road from Kochi, Thrissur, and Chalakudy. Local buses and taxis are available.
